“Tough by Fair” Book Discussion with Author Winston Satran

Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library Presents “Tough by Fair” Book Discussion with Author Winston Satran on Monday afternoons from 2 to 3 p.m., October 5, 12, 19, and 26. From 1972–1986, Satran served as deputy warden and warden of the ND State Penitentiary. When he started, the prison was in disarray and on the verge of falling into chaos due to inadequate funding and staffing. The facility suffered from improper discipline, assaults on staff, decaying infrastructure, and broken utilities.  He will elaborate on his triumphs and challenges in instituting thriving new programs for prisoners, building respect for staff, and regaining control of the inmate population.
