Discover summer fun at Fort Mandan State Historic Site, 838 – 28th Ave SW, Washburn.  Enjoy free interactive learning programs for all ages.  Learn new skills and create hands-on projects centered on the themes of  naturalism in July, survival in August, and agriculture and ecology in September.  Programs are offered throughout the day.

July 27-31, Edible Plants of the Expedition. Learn about some of the plants observed by the expedition in this area and how those plants are used today.

Aug 1-2, Navigating Nature. Take on the role of a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition sent on a journey to document the landscape, plants, and animals of the area while learning the basics of navigation. You will be equipped with a clipboard, field journal, field map, compass, and pencils. Conclude your work by sending your findings to the president as the men of the expedition did before departing Fort Mandan.

Aug 3-7, Lost in Translation: The Interpreter’s Game. Learn how complicated communication was for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Aug 8-9, Candle Making. Craft a keepsake to spark your love of history.

Aug 15-16, Soapmaking. How did the expedition keep clean? Make soap to take on your adventures.

Aug 17-21, But Did You Survive? Let’s play a game of survival. As you embark on your journey of westward expansion, learn about the medicine of the expedition.

Aug 22-23, Flint & Steel Racing. Learn about the fire-starting process of using flint and steel. Once you have mastered the task of creating a spark, test your skills in a fire-starting race!

Aug 24-28, But Did You Survive? Let’s play a game of survival. As you embark on your journey of westward expansion, learn about the medicine of the expedition.

Aug 29-30, Ice Water Challenge. Being a fur trader puts you in extreme situations. How long can you last?
