Embark on a hands-on adventure at Fort Mandan State Historic Site, 838 – 28th Ave SW, Washburn. Enjoy free interactive learning programs for all ages. Learn new skills and create hands-on projects centered on the themes of agriculture and ecology. Programs are offered at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.
Aug. 31-Sept. 4, Farming on the Northern Great Plains. Discover the rich agricultural heritage along the Missouri River, from Indigenous gardens to modern-day agricultural practices.
Sept. 5-6, Bubble Art. Create colorful bubble art on a postcard, or bring white T-shirts, blankets, or towels from home to decorate.
Sept. 7-11, Where the Buffalo Roam. Join in the conversation during this lecture about the bison’s ecological impact on the northern Plains.
Sept. 12-13, Bird Scavenger Hunt. Follow clues from your feathered friends during a scavenger hunt across the grounds of Fort Mandan.
Sept. 14-18: Ecology of the Missouri River. Learn about the ecological importance of the river before and after the Garrison Dam.
Sept. 19-20, Ice Water Challenge. Being a fur trader puts you in extreme situations, including having to wade through icy water to check traps. How long would you last?
Sept. 21-25, Ecology of the Missouri River. Learn about the ecological importance of the river before and after the Garrison Dam.
Sept. 26-27, Paper Boat Challenge. Design a boat to transport goods up the river for the fur trade.
